Charlotte Announces Graduate Assistantship Pay Increase

UNC Charlotte is raising the pay for students on graduate assistantships beginning in the 2024-2025 academic year.

This change will incorporate the previous $1,000 scholarship that GASP-eligible doctoral students received and increase the overall level of funding going forward.

Stipends for graduate students on assistantships will be increased, based on student eligibility and prorated based on a 20-hour per week assistantship, as follows: 

  • $1,500 to doctoral students on an assistantship and
  • $250 to master’s students on an assistantship

Doctoral students eligible for GASP:

  • Hold a teaching or research assistantship,
  • Are enrolled full-time (nine hours or more OR enrolled in GRAD 9800) and 
  • Are enrolled within ten semesters (eight semesters for Advanced Standing students) of the term of admission. 

Nominations Open for Graduate Program Excellence Awards

Graduate program directors and coordinators play an important and pivotal role in the success of graduate programs. In addition to managing enrollment, Graduate Program Directors and Coordinators must track and manage their students, while implementing programs and services to promote their success. Doing this well deserves recognition and praise.

The Thomas L. Reynolds Leadership Award and Graduate Program Administrator Award honors excellence in the overall management of a graduate program.

2024 De Silva, First Citizens Award Honorees Named

Adam Reitzel, professor of Biological Sciences, was awarded the 2024 First Citizens Bank Scholars Medal. Since 1988, this award has recognized a senior full-time faculty member annually for outstanding scholarship, creativity and/or research. Last year’s honoree was Kirill Afonin, professor of Chemistry.

The 2024 Harshini V. de Silva Graduate Mentor Award was presented to Juan Vivero-Escoto, professor of Chemistry. Established in memory of the noted professor of biology, the de Silva award recognizes a full-time member of the graduate faculty who evinces outstanding graduate mentoring. The 2023 award went to Margaret Quinlan, professor of Communication Studies.

Ceremonies honoring the two award winners will be scheduled in the spring semester, presided over by the Chancellor, the Interim Dean of the Graduate School and University officers.

Graduate Program Excellence Award Winners Honored

The 2022-23 Graduate Program Excellence award recipients were honored Sept. 20 in a reception held in the Student Union Art Gallery.

Dr. Jy Wu, Infrastructure and Environmental Systems, was selected to receive the Thomas L. Reynolds Leadership Award for 2022-23. Carmalita Govan, Computer Science Graduate Program Coordinator, received the Graduate School’s Outstanding Program Administrator award.

The Graduate School invites nominations for the 2024 First Citizens Bank Scholars and Harshini deSilva Graduate Mentor Awards. The First Citizens Award recognizes a senior full-time faculty member for outstanding scholarship, creativity, and/or research. The Harshini de Silva Mentor award recognizes a faculty member who exemplifies outstanding graduate mentoring.

Faculty Fellow for Grant Writing Position – Graduate and Postdoctoral Writing Center

The Graduate and Postdoctoral Writing Center is a new initiative created through a collaboration among the Graduate School, the Division of Research and the Writing Resources Center. Launching in Fall 2023, the center’s team will include the Graduate School’s Associate Teaching Professor of Writing, the Director of Charlotte’s Writing Resources Center, a faculty fellow, two doctoral writing fellows and part-time administrative support. 

The Graduate Writing Center seeks a faculty fellow to provide grant-writing training to Charlotte postdoctoral scholars and graduate students in doctoral and research master’s degree programs. Course release and/or compensation to be negotiated based on faculty salary and teaching load.

Responsibilities

  • Build and deliver curricula (delivered through workshop series or academic courses) that train cohorts of postdoctoral scholars and graduate students to find and apply for grants in both STEM and social science fields (similar to the Catalyst program for faculty).  This may involve sourcing and collaborating with peers who serve as guest speakers. Topics might include:
    • Searching for funding opportunities using PIVOT and other resources
    • Interacting with program officers
    • Analyzing solicitations
    • Preparing all components of the proposal
    • Designing figures, tables, and infographics to enhance clarity
    • Budget design and budget justification writing
    • Preparing supporting materials such as CVs, current and pending funding forms, data management plans, etc
    • Routing proposals through the Division of Research (when applicable)
    • Identifying next steps if proposal is declined
    • The resubmission process
  • Provide one-on-one coaching and grant proposal review to help postdoctoral scholars and graduate students submit competitive proposals
  • Search for and publicize postdoctoral scholar and graduate student grant opportunities via postdoc and graduate student newsletters
  • Create and maintain a collection of grant-writing resources on the Thomas L. Reynolds Center for Graduate Life and Learning website
  • Collaborate with the Associate Teaching Professor of Writing to improve postdoctoral scholars’ and graduate students’ writing skills and habits related to grant writing.

Qualifications

  • Open to tenured or tenure-track faculty, with Associate rank or higher
  • Experience writing grant proposals, particularly NSF or NIH-funded grants
  • Experience managing a successful grant as a PI or Co-PI
  • Strong mentorship and teaching skills

The initial appointment would be for 18 months, with annual renewal options.
Desired Start Date: January 2024

Govan, Wu Cited for Graduate Leadership

Dr. Jy Wu, Infrastructure and Environmental Systems, and Carmalita Govan, Computer Science and Artificial Intelligence, were selected to receive the Thomas L. Reynolds Leadership Award for 2022-23.

The Reynolds Leadership Award honors excellence in graduate program administration and is presented annually to a Graduate Program Director (GPD) or Graduate Program Administrator (GPA).  Recipients are selected by a committee of previous winners, the Graduate Council chair and Graduate School staff.

Reynolds Leadership Award Deadline Mar. 1

Graduate program directors and coordinators play an important and pivotal role in the success of graduate programs. In addition to managing enrollment, Graduate Program Directors and Coordinators must track and manage their students, while implementing programs and services to promote their success. Doing this well deserves recognition and praise.

This award recognizes excellence in the overall management of a graduate program. The winner will receive $1000, an engraved plaque, and their name will be engraved on a perpetual trophy on permanent display at a central location on campus.

ELIGIBILITY:

• Evidence of either growth in enrollment and/or improved graduation from the program; • Evidence of best practices as an advisor, mentor, and advocate for students (such as tracking, nominating, funding, etc.); • Effectiveness as a program administrator; • Evidence of efforts to improve the program experience for students; • Effective communication with the Graduate School and within the college.

NOMINATIONS:

• GPDs and GPCs must be nominated, but the nomination can come from anyone (two-page limit). • Once nominated, a GPD or GPC must submit a written statement reflecting his or her philosophy of graduate education and the role of the GPD or GPC (two-page limit). • Include two letters of support – one of which should be from a current or former student (two-page limit). • The Dean of the College must endorse nominations. A simple statement of support is appropriate. • Nominees must have served in the role at least two years in order to be nominated.Selection committee – comprised of members from the Graduate School staff, Graduate Council, GPSG and previous winners.

Winners will be announced by early spring 2023.

Pinku Mukherjee Appointed Interim Associate Provost and Graduate School Dean

Pinku Mukherjee, Irwin Belk Distinguished Professor for Cancer Research and associate dean for research and graduate education in the College of Liberal Arts & Sciences, has been appointed interim associate provost and dean of the Graduate School effective Jan. 3, 2023, succeeding Tom Reynolds, who will retire after 40 years of service to the institution.

Graduate School to Move to Reese

The Graduate School and Graduate Admissions will soon have a new location to serve the UNC Charlotte community and prospective students near the center of campus in the Reese building.

Beginning on Monday, October 10, the Graduate School will be located on the fifth floor of Reese. Subsequently, Graduate Admissions will welcome prospective students to its new location on the first floor of the Reese building. Staff will continue to work in the Cone University Center, Room 268 until Graduate Admissions moves to Reese.

The Graduate School invites nominations for the 2023 First Citizens Bank Scholars Medal. This award recognizes a senior full-time faculty member for outstanding scholarship, creativity, and/or research. Nominations may come from any UNC Charlotte faculty member. The First Citizens Bank Scholars Medal has been awarded since 1988, with last year’s honoree being Dr. Jean-Claude Thill, Geography and Earth Sciences.

The award — consisting of a cash prize, framed citation and a medal — will be presented in the spring semester at a ceremony and reception presided over by the Chancellor, officials of First Citizens Bank, the Interim Dean of the Graduate School and University officers.

The Graduate School is also seeking nominations for the annual competition for the 2023 Harshini V. de Silva Graduate Mentor Award. Nominations should come from a chair of the academic department. This award was established in memory of Dr. Harshini de Silva, an associate professor of biology, who was noted for her dedication to the academic and professional development of graduate students. The 2022 award recipient was Dr. Adam Reitzel, Department of Biological Sciences. 

The award  — consisting of a crystal obelisk, a framed citation and a cash prize — will be presented in the spring semester at a ceremony and reception presided over by the Chancellor, the Interim Dean of the Graduate School and University officers.

Grad Ed Summit Set Feb. 4

The 2022 Graduate Education Summit will again be virtual this year, kicking off at 9:30 a.m. Feb. 4.

Topics will include recruitment opportunities and the new Slate admissions system, a new onboarding tool kit, new Responsive Dashboard in DegreeWorks, plus Paula Keeton of the Center for Counseling and Psychological Services (CAPS) will offer an overview of graduate student mental health.

Rasmussen to Participate in Charlotte Authorship Seminar

Professor of Philosophy and Graduate School Faculty Fellow Lisa Rasmussen will join members of Charlotte’s legal staff later this month in a virtual session on authorship.

The event, “Who’s Steering the Author Ship? Introducing the Authorship Policy & Resolution Procedures,” will address University Policy 318, “Authorship Policy and Resolution Procedures,” established in May 2021.  The session will be held Jan. 26 at Noon.
