The Graduate School will offer Mentor Training for graduate faculty May 15, 9:00-4:00, in its second session of the year. The session will be held in the Halton Reading Room.
The curriculum comes from the Center for the Improvement of the Mentored Experience in Research (CIMER) at the University of Wisconsin. It is highly interactive and includes a variety of useful resources and tools.
Join the more than 240 faculty members who have already participated in this training. You will leave with tools and best practices to help you effectively mentor graduate students and postdoctoral scholars.

Sponsored by the Graduate School and in conjunction with the Graduate Research Symposium, the Diversity Scholars Forum will be held Mar. 22, 2024 in the Popp Martin Student Union, Multipurpose Room 340.
Students who are selected to participate will receive a modest $200 stipend to support their work and a certificate.
The event will feature graduate student and postdoctoral research related to diversity, equity and inclusion. The Diversity Scholars Forum showcases research that centers on DEI issues related to the community - both on campus and in the greater Charlotte community. To showcase their work, amplify their voices and celebrate the value of diversity, student presenters will give short lightning-round style poster presentations about their research projects.
Scholars interested in exhibiting their work are encouraged to submit their application before the Dec. 15 deadline.
After 24 years of dedicated service, Maryanne Maree-Sams is retiring from her role in Graduate Admissions.
A reception to honor Maryanne’s accomplishments will be held Dec. 1, 3-5 p.m. in the Student Union Art Gallery.

Graduate Admissions is again providing GPDs with a list of new and continuing students in their program who are eligible to register but have not. The report will be distributed weekly from start of registration until the close of registration for each term.
Programs are encouraged to reach out to these students and urge them to register.

The final round for the 2023 3MT competition will be held Nov. 17, 4-7 p.m., in EPIC G256.
3MT is a communication competition that challenges graduate students to describe their research in 3 minutes or less, using just one static slide. It is an important professional development opportunity for graduate students.

The new Graduate & Postdoctoral Writing Center (GPWC), a collaboration between the Graduate School, Writing Resources Center (WRC) and the Division of Research, will host an open house Nov. 1 from 12 to 3 p.m..
The GPWC is located in Denny 213 and offers a range of writing support to graduate students and postdoctoral scholars.

The yield communication campaign for Spring 2024 launches on Thursday, Oct. 12. The target audience is admitted graduate students who have yet to accept their admissions offer. The communications encourage them to submit their enrollment intention form.

Dr. Jy Wu, Infrastructure and Environmental Systems, was selected to receive the Thomas L. Reynolds Leadership Award for 2022-23. Carmalita Govan, Computer Science Graduate Program Coordinator, received the Graduate School’s Outstanding Program Administrator award.

UNC Charlotte was recently awarded a three-year National Science Foundation Innovations in Graduate Education grant of approximately $500,000 to explore best practices in training STEM graduate students to communicate their research to non-specialist audiences.

The Graduate School invites nominations for the 2024 First Citizens Bank Scholars and Harshini deSilva Graduate Mentor Awards. The First Citizens Award recognizes a senior full-time faculty member for outstanding scholarship, creativity, and/or research. The Harshini de Silva Mentor award recognizes a faculty member who exemplifies outstanding graduate mentoring.

Graduate School Assistant Dean for Funding and Research Julie Goodliffe is conducting an outreach to potentially eligible candidates to apply for an NSF Graduate Research Fellowship.
