3MT Final Round Coming Nov. 22

The final round for the 2024 3-Minute Thesis competition will take place on November 22 from 4:30 to 6:00 p.m. in the Rowe Auditorium. 10 finalists will compete with their most compelling — yet brief — research presentations.

Grad Students Sought for Admissions Ambassador Role

The Graduate Admissions Office is looking for a dynamic group of currently enrolled graduate students to serve as Graduate Admissions Ambassadors for the 2024-2025 academic year to help recruit and enroll the graduate class. Ambassadors are well-positioned to connect with prospective applicants given their unique experiences and perspectives as enrolled graduate students.

UNC Charlotte graduate and undergraduate students are invited to take part in the Penn Resilience Program. The program is a series of free workshops in February and March that teach strategies and skills to help you reach your goals, manage stress and strengthen your relationships.

The Graduate and Professional Student Government (GPSG) is accepting abstracts for the 2024 Graduate Research Symposium (GRS). Graduate students who engaged in research projects can enter the GRS and share results with other graduate students.

Application Open for 2024 Diversity Scholars Forum Submissions

Sponsored by the Graduate School and in conjunction with the Graduate Research Symposium, the Diversity Scholars Forum will be held Mar. 22, 2024 in the Popp Martin Student Union, Multipurpose Room 340.

Students who are selected to participate will receive a modest $200 stipend to support their work and a certificate.

The event will feature graduate student and postdoctoral research related to diversity, equity and inclusion. The Diversity Scholars Forum showcases research that centers on DEI issues related to the community - both on campus and in the greater Charlotte community. To showcase their work, amplify their voices and celebrate the value of diversity, student presenters will give short lightning-round style poster presentations about their research projects.

Scholars interested in exhibiting their work are encouraged to submit their application before the Dec. 15 deadline.

3MT Final Competition Coming Nov. 17

Come see the 10 finalists compete for a chance to win $1000! Reception to follow in the Rowe lobby.

The final round for the 2023 3MT competition will be held Nov. 17, 4-7 p.m., in EPIC G256.

3MT is a communication competition that challenges graduate students to describe their research in 3 minutes or less, using just one static slide. It is an important professional development opportunity for graduate students.

Open House Set for Graduate and Postdoctoral Writing Center

The new Graduate & Postdoctoral Writing Center (GPWC), a collaboration between the Graduate SchoolWriting Resources Center (WRC) and the Division of Research, will host an open house Nov. 1 from 12 to 3 p.m..

The GPWC is located in Denny 213 and offers a range of writing support to graduate students and postdoctoral scholars.

“Leadership Essentials” Among Strong Fall GRAD Course Line-Up

This course (GRAD 6350/8350) gives students an opportunity to assess leadership strengths and weaknesses while developing a personal improvement plan. 

The course, which meets Monday’s and Wednesdays from 4-5:30 p.m. in Fretwell 306, is one of a host of valuable GRAD courses available for credit.

Mentee Training Set for Doctoral Students

The Thomas L. Reynolds Center for Graduate Life and Learning (Reynolds CGLL) is launching mentee training for doctoral students based on the curriculum developed by the Center for the Improvement of the Mentored Experience in Research (CIMER) Institute. In this first session, students will learn strategies for communicating clearly with their research advisors about goals and expectations. Facilitated by Dr. Jill Huerta, Reynolds CGLL director, and Sandra Krause, assistant dean for graduate academic services.

School of Professional Studies to Launch Summer Google Certificate Academy

The School of Professional Studies will launch a Grow with Google Career Academy this summer at no cost.

From May 1-Aug. 20, UNC Charlotte participants can access up to 10 courses and earn a sharable digital certificate at completion to use on the LinkedIn profile or resume.

Certificate content is provided by Google and hosted by Coursera.

CGLL and Writing Resources Center Introduce Doctoral Writing Fellows Program

Applications for Charlotte’s newest fellowship, the Doctoral Writing Fellows Program, will be accepted through May 10.

Co-sponsored by the Thomas L. Reynolds Center for Graduate Life and Learning and the Writing Resources Center, the Doctoral Writing Fellowship will include a 20-hour per week assistantship, doctoral in-state tuition, doctoral stipend (based on the student’s program), health insurance coverage, and shared office space.  The fellowships will be funded for the full academic year and begin in Fall 2023.

The inaugural cohort of Doctoral Writing Fellows has a unique opportunity to take a leadership role in the Charlotte graduate student community. Dr. Lisa Russell-Pinson, Associate Teaching Professor of Writing in the Graduate School, and Dr. Katie Garahan, the Writing Resources Center Director, will train and mentor Fellows in the development of graduate writing support programs, including one-to-one writing support sessions, writing groups, presentations, workshops, and retreats. Drs. Russell-Pinson and Garahan will also invite Fellows to engage in innovative writing research focused on graduate writer self-efficacy, international and multilingual student writing support, and writing program assessment.

Doctoral Writing Fellows will have an opportunity to: 

  • Refine writing and communication skills
  • Develop valuable professional writing experience
  • Participate in vital institutional research on writing and communication 
  • Collaborate with a committed, experienced, and engaged interdisciplinary team 
  • Take an important leadership role in the graduate student community

This opportunity will be of particular interest to students with career goals related to science writing, grant writing, non-profit communication, and academic and educational publishing.

To be considered for a Doctoral Writing Fellowship, doctoral students should submit to both Drs. Russell-Pinson and Garahan by May 10:

  • Cover letter stating your reason for interest in the program
  • CV
  • Original writing sample

NSF Seeking Proposals to Boost STEM Research Competencies

The NSF Centers for Research Excellence is calling for proposals from relevant faculty and graduate students that explore ways for graduate students in research-based master’s and doctoral degree programs to develop the skills, knowledge, and competencies needed to pursue a range of STEM careers.

Each eligible institution may send two proposals for this 5-year funding that ranges from $2-3-Million as part of the NSF Research Traineeship (NRT) Program.

The UNC Charlotte Division of Research urges interested faculty and students to submit proposals following the White Paper Submission Guidelines  by June 9, 2023 at 3:00 p.m.

Teaching Fellowship Applications Close Apr. 21

The Graduate School and the Reynolds Center for Graduate Life and Learning are pleased to inform you that the Graduate School’s Teaching Fellowship program will be offered for the Fall 2023 – Spring 2024 academic year.

Doctoral students who meet the criteria listed below are encouraged to apply:

  • Will hold a Fall 2023-Spring 2024 teaching assistantship and will be working as an Instructor of Record in Spring 2024
  • Will be available to take a 2-credit training course in Fall 2023 (the course will be online with some synchronous meetings tentatively scheduled for Friday mornings)
  • Are committed to pursuing a career that includes college teaching (students who are tentative about a college teaching career are invited to enroll in GRAD 8201 instead)
  • Have been a teaching assistant (or Instructor of Record) for at least two prior semesters
  • Will be in their third or more year of Doctoral studies as of Fall 2023

Fellows can gain a competitive advantage in the job search and receive an award of $3000 ($1500 each semester) in addition to their assistantship stipend. The program provides focused instruction in course design, teaching methodology and classroom practices.

This is a competitive program with limited openings. Interested students should apply at the Center for Graduate Life and Learning by 5 pm, Apr. 21.

Dean's Dissertation Award Deadline May 26

May 26 is the submission deadline for the 2023 Dean’s Distinguished Dissertation Award recognizing outstanding research and scholarship by a doctoral student.

The fields of competition are Biological Sciences/Life Sciences and Humanities and Fine Arts.

CGLL Spring Writing Retreat Planned

The Graduate Writing Retreat provides a multi-day opportunity for graduate students, faculty and staff, and members of the community who want to make progress on a large writing project.
