I have found being the Director of our MA Graduate program a meaningful and challenging responsibility. I have enjoyed it, and probably more so after my first year, It takes a while to learn all the resources, people you can contact, the answers to numerous questions from applicants, and addressing enrollment issues from our program Chair and faculty.
But for me to have had a role in answering the emails of numerous individuals inquiring about our profession and program, to have Skyped with many and met many in person, for me that was the highlight of this position. I loved seeing the number of applications role in, I enjoyed meeting them for the first time at our Group Interview Day, and then to work with the faculty in selecting those we admit, answering questions in a supportive way for those denied, and knowing all the while I had a role in shaping our program and the future of our profession. There were times, of course, when it felt overwhelming with teaching and advising as well. But this role is so important, so impactful, that it is definitely a role I would gladly continue in if I were not retiring.
