CGLL Sets Open House for New Atkins Location

The Center for Graduate Life and Learning (CGLL) will host an open house for graduate students, faculty and staff Sept 7 and 8 in Atkins 149.

Boost Writing Progress with CGLL Friday Morning Writing Session

The Aug. 26 Friday Morning Writing session at the Center for Graduate Life and Learning (CGLL) provides a morning opportunity for graduate students, faculty and staff, and members of the community who want to make progress on a large writing project. The session runs from 9-12 p.m.

Offering a quiet space to work, structured writing time, and writing-related resources, Friday Morning Writing makes writing less isolating.

Coffee, snacks and the use of a microwave oven will be provided in the Atkins 146 session.

CGLL Course Addresses Setting Good Writing Habits

The Center for Graduate Life and Learning will host Dr. Lisa Russell-Pinson, Associate Teaching Professor of Writing in a course entitled Establishing and Maintaining Strong Writing Habits Wednesday, Aug. 24 in Atkins 146.

Dr. Russell-Pinson will show how to develop and stick to a writing process and cover tips for consistent and efficient writing.

New Point of Contact Named for Thesis and Dissertation Coordination

Laura Pagani, Student Services Specialist at the Center for Graduate Life and Learning, has been appointed the lead student contact for thesis and dissertation formatting and submission.

Students may contact Laura via email (lpagani@uncc.edu) with any questions or issues. Information about defense and submission procedures and requirements can be found under the Current Students tab on the Graduate School website.

June 28 Seminar Offered on Thesis, Dissertation Formatting and Submission

Students planning to submit a thesis or dissertation within the next semester may benefit from this session addressing common questions about formatting, defense and submission procedures.

These workshops are held approximately every two weeks at the Center for Graduate Life and Learning (CGLL). Register for the June 28 session, visit the CGLL for a schedule of sessions and visit YouTube for previous recordings.

CGLL Offers Certificate in Workplace Competencies

Through the Certificate in Workplace Competencies, students can build a skill set to differentiate from others in the job market.

Studies have shown that employers want their new hires with graduate and professional degrees to be well-versed in essential professional skills in written and verbal communication, presentation-building, managing new initiatives, and working on diverse teams.

CGLL Seeks Global Niner GA

The CGLL is seeking a graduate assistant to fill a Global Niner position for the 2022-23 academic year.

Key attributes sought for the 20-hour-per-week role include a 3.0 GPA, strong written communication skill, passion for graduate student success, outgoing personality, and connection to the international student community. The role includes creating and supporting programming tailored to the needs of international graduate students as well as working on other diversity-related initiatives.

Certificate in Workplace Competencies Adds Key Resumé Credential

Studies have shown that employers want new hires with graduate and professional degrees to be well-versed in essential professional skills in written and verbal communication, presentation-building, managing new initiatives, and working on diverse teams. Those competencies are at the core of the Workplace Competencies Certificate program offered through the Center for Graduate Life and Learning.

Get a Leg Up on Writing Projects at the Graduate Writing Retreat

Scheduled June 3-5 in the Pop Martin Student Union, Rm 263, the Graduate Writing Retreat is an opportunity for grad students to make progress on a large writing or other work project.

The writing retreat offers a quiet space, structured writing time, and writing-related resources, support and accountability, and decreases the sense of isolation that many feel during the writing process.

Lunch, snacks, and coffee will be provided. Enjoy flexible seating, natural lighting, and ample outlets.

Commencement Reminder

All graduating graduate students attend the May 13 graduate ceremony in the stadium. The ceremony starts at 6 pm, but students should plan to arrive by 5 pm and present a legal ID (license or passport) to pick up a required name card. A reception in Hauser Pavilion for graduates and their families will follow the ceremony.

GLF-Hosted Spring Gathering is Apr. 28

The Graduate Life Fellows are hosting a Grad Student Spring Gathering with free pizza.

The event starts at 4 p.m. outside the Center for Graduate Life and Learning (CGLL), Adkins 149 (next to the Career Center).

CGLL Offers “Topics on Diversity and Inclusion” 2-Credit Course

The Center for Graduate Life and Learning’s (CGLL) Topics on Diversity and Inclusion, 6000/8000, CRN 17231, 2 credits, is available for student registration. 

Sessions will be led by Dr. Manuel Pérez Quiñones and held in Denny 205, 11:30-1:10.  The course explores diversity and inclusion from various multi-disciplinary perspectives.

Apr. 22 Deadline for Graduate Teaching Fellowship Applications

The Graduate School is accepting applications for Graduate School Teaching Fellowships (GSTF) through Apr. 22.

Fellows receive an award of $3000 plus focused instruction in course design, teaching methodology, and classroom best practices.

Each year the Graduate School’s Center for Graduate Life and Learning appoints a group of continuing graduate students to serve as Graduate Life Fellows (GLFs).  GLFs are awarded $5,000 for the academic year. Applications for the 2022 – 2023 academic year are now open.
