New Program Offers Alternative Path to STEM Doctoral Degree

A project of the Department of Mechanical Engineering and Engineering Science (MEES) is providing an additional path to a doctoral degree for STEM students, allowing patentable projects to be developed to meet capstone requirements in addition to publication of original research.

The program, Pathways to Entrepreneurship (PAtENT) expands the opportunity to earn a doctoral degree, possibly spurring graduation rates and encouraging technological innovation. Funded by a National Science Foundation Innovations in Graduate Education (IGE) award received last fall, the program provides each faculty-student team with $5,000 to support research.

“The central goal of the project is to develop an alternate roadmap for STEM PhD students that is scalable and reflects the rapidly evolving workforce needs,” said Dr. Terry Xu, Professor and Associate Chair for Graduate Programs, MEES.

New Niner Research System to Launch

Reseach and Economic Research (RED) will launch a new research administration system called Niner Research in the fall, replacing today’s NORM system.

The new system will provide proposal and contract administration, conflict of interest management, the use of laboratory animals, biosafety, and human subject research. The new system will be in service by Sept. 30.

Over the next few weeks, RED and college research office staff will host a series of instructor-led training sessions on the new system.

CGL Accepting Grad Life Fellow Applications

The Center for Graduate Life is currently taking Graduate Life Fellow applications for the 2021-2022 year through Mar. 14.

The goal of the GLF program is to enhance the graduate community through leadership, peer mentoring and the coordination of activities that foster diverse social and academic engagement. Fellows receive $5000 for the academic year and great experience for their CV or resume.

Accelerate to Industry Session: Leading from Behind

The Center for Graduate Life (CGL) will offer the Accelerate to Industry (A2i) workshop Leading from Behind Mar. 12, featuring key leaders of intelligence software company Tresata.

Members of Tresata’s management team will share strategies on leveraging the soft skills needed to motivate high performance and help leaders lead.

With the recent departure of Student Services Specialist Coren O’Hara, some Graduate School administrative roles have been reassigned to ensure thesis and dissertation services continue uninterrupted.

Effective immediately:

Dr. Aura Young, aura.young@uncc.edu, will be responsible for thesis and dissertation formatting and submission.
Julie Green, jhgreen@uncc.edu, will be responsible for graduation preclearance

U.S. News and World Report Marketing Opportunity

U.S. News and World Report is offering UNC Charlotte colleges the opportunity to market their graduate programs through Student Connect, their lead generation platform. Through a special rate of approximately $5,000 annually (based upon traffic), colleges receive a profile page at U.S. News and World Report’s education site. From that page there are a number of options colleges can choose including lead generation, Best Graduate Programs impressions and additional reach tools. Because this is administered at the college level, please contact your college communicator if interested in participating.

Showcase Your Best Students

Through it’s Instagram and LinkedIn accounts, the CGL publishes examples of professional, personal or academic achievements to recognize and celebrate students’ work.

Graduate Student Needs Assessment Launched

The Graduate School recently launched its biennial Graduate Needs Assessment Survey to gauge needs and experiences of students.

The survey, conducted by the Center for Graduate Life, takes about 10 minutes to complete and provides valuable insights to inform University decisions about support and programming. Data collection will continue through Mar. 17 and all graduate students are encouraged to participate.

Ya-yu Lo Takes de Silva Mentor Award

Ya-yu Lo, professor of Special Education and graduate program director for the M.Ed. and MAT programs in the Department of Special Education and Child Development, is the 2021 recipient of the Harshini V. de Silva Graduate Mentor Award. She was honored at a special Zoom ceremony Thursday, Feb. 18.

New Funding Source Available for Summer 2021

A new Graduate School Summer Fellowship Program (GSSF) is available for students who need financial support to continue to focus on their research over the summer months. The GSSF Fellowship provides a $6,000 stipend for qualifying students.

CGL Issues Call for TA Award Nominations

The Center for Graduate Life is accepting nominations for the 2020-2021 Outstanding Graduate Teaching Assistant (TA) Awards through Mar. 1.

This year, $1,000 awards will be presented to a teaching assistant who has served as Instructor of Record for at least one semester, and to a TA who has performed the range of responsibilities in assistance to a faculty member.

A ceremony is planned for Apr. 23 to recognize this year’s award winners.

Wong Receives Reynolds Leadership Award

Associate Professor of Architecture Peter Wong was selected to receive the Thomas L. Reynolds Leadership Award for 2020-2021 for his contributions to student success above and beyond his teaching role.

The Reynolds Leadership Award honors excellence in graduate program administration and is presented annually to a Graduate Program Director (GPD) or Graduate Program Coordinator (GPC).

GPD Nominations Needed for New Student Graduate School Fellowships

GPD nominations are required by Mar. 15 for some 2021-22 Graduate School Fellowships such as the Wayland H. Cato Jr. First-Year Doctoral Fellowship and the Herschel and Cornelia Everett Foundation First-Year Graduate Fellowship.

These fellowships are funded by donors for need-based and merit awards that recognize excellent students for their academic achievement and provide assistance to those who demonstrate financial need.

Nominations must be submitted by Mar. 15. Student applications must be completed by Mar. 30. To nominate, GPDs can access the awards in the University Scholarship Portal.

ISSO Sets Financial Certification Form Deadlines

The International Student and Scholar Office (ISSO) has published Financial Certificate Form (FCF) deadlines for international students for the upcoming summer and fall semesters.

The FCF helps UNC Charlotte obtain complete and accurate information about the funds available to international applicants who want to study in the United States.
