Key Considerations to Prepare for Fall Semester

Following are some tips to help prepare for a successful start of the fall semester:
  • Catalog Update Petitions
Students must wait to submit 2021-22 Catalog Update petitions until the fall 2021 semester begins. Catalog Update petitions are automatically processed under the term in which they were submitted.  This means that if you submit a Catalog Update petition during the Summer 2021 term, the student’s catalog will reflect the current 2020-21 catalog. To update a student’s catalog to the upcoming 2021-22 catalog, the petition will need to be submitted after the first day of fall classes, Aug. 23.
  • Advanced Standing Track Requests for Doctoral Programs
Doctoral students who enter with a relevant master’s degree may be admitted to an Advanced Standing track in some doctoral programs. In those programs offering this option, the Graduate Program Director must recommend admission to the Advanced Standing track for the term in which the student begins their graduate study. Please send these requests to Sandra.Krause@uncc.edu.
  • Incomplete Grades that will Default to Unsatisfactory
If you have a student that has been assigned an Incomplete grade (I) that will default to Unsatisfactory (U) at the end of the summer semester, the grade must be assigned and submitted no later than August 16, 2021 to avoid suspension or termination. The Graduate School will communicate with individual instructors as well.

Applicants Sought for Economic Mobility Research Grants

The UNC Charlotte Urban Institute has opened applications for a new cohort of Gambrell Faculty Fellows. The Fellowship Program funds short-term research projects (up to 18 months) examining issues related to economic mobility in the Charlotte region.

Now in its third year, the Gambrell Faculty Fellowship Program is a grants program for UNC Charlotte faculty funded by The Gambrell Foundation. This year, the program is particularly interested in racial equity and the impact of the pandemic on economic mobility.

Up to 5 fellowships will be awarded this year. Proposed projects can have a maximum budget of $15,000.  The deadline for submissions is 5:00 p.m. on Wednesday, June 30, 2021. The grant period will begin August 15, 2021. Information and application form.

Orientation Events Announced for Fall Semester

Graduate Student Orientation for the fall semester will have three components:
  1. The Graduate Student Onboarding Portal that was built last summer. The analytics for this site are positive–there were over 6,000 users and more than 29,000 page views during the past 10 months. Like last year, there will be a section where GPDs can list their individual department or program orientations. If you would like to participate, please contact Dan Jones.
  2. A Graduate Student Virtual Orientation session, a format that attracts almost twice as many attendees as the previous face-to-face version. This fall’s session is scheduled for Aug.19 at 4 p.m. and will include a welcome from the Graduate School’s Dean and Associate Dean, an overview of CGL support CGL Executive Director Jill Huerta, and a Q&A panel with the CGL’s Graduate Life Fellows, moderated by Assistant Director Aura Young.
  3. New Graduate Student Welcome Receptions will be hosted on three days during the first week of class, divided by college. The schedule is available on the CGL Orientation site. GPDs, faculty, staff, and student organizations from each of the colleges will be invited to attend the appropriate reception. This should be a fantastic opportunity for new students to build a sense of belonging, meet peers, and connect with others within and outside of their programs. More details will be shared at a later date.

Workshop Topic: Formatting and Submitting a Thesis or Dissertation

The Center for Graduate Life (CGL) will sponsor a workshop on Formatting and Submitting Your Thesis or Dissertation May 27, 4-5 p.m.
This session offers answers to questions on formatting, defense and submission procedures.  The sessions are offered approximately every two weeks.

ISSO Shares Update on People Vaccinated Outside the U.S.

The International Student & Scholar Office shared an update from NAFSA: Association of International Educators regarding requirements for people vaccinated outside the United States.

People who were vaccinated outside the United States with an FDA-authorized COVID-19 vaccine and have received all the recommended doses do not need any additional doses. People who received the first dose of an FDA-authorized COVID-19 vaccine that requires two doses do not need to restart the vaccine series in the United States but should receive the second dose as close to the recommended time as possible.

Some people may have received a COVID-19 vaccine that is not currently authorized in the United States. No data are available on the safety or efficacy of receiving a COVID-19 vaccine currently authorized in the United States after receipt of a non-FDA-authorized COVID-19 vaccine. However, in some circumstances people who received a COVID-19 vaccine not currently authorized in the United States may be offered revaccination with an FDA-authorized vaccine:

  • COVID-19 vaccines not authorized by FDA but listed for emergency use by the World Health Organization (WHO)2
    • People who have received all recommended doses of a COVID-19 vaccine that has been listed for emergency use by WHO do not need any additional doses with an FDA-authorized COVID-19 vaccine.
    • People who have not received all the recommended doses of a COVID-19 vaccine listed for emergency use by WHO may be offered a complete FDA-authorized COVID-19 vaccine series.
  • COVID-19 vaccines neither authorized by FDA nor listed for emergency use by WHO
    • People who received all or some of the recommended doses of a COVID-19 vaccine that is neither authorized by FDA nor listed for emergency use by WHO may be offered a complete FDA-authorized COVID-19 vaccine series.

The minimum interval between the last dose of a non-FDA authorized vaccine or a WHO-listed vaccine and an FDA-authorized COVID-19 vaccine is 28 days. Only people who have received all recommended doses of an FDA-authorized or WHO-listed COVID-19 vaccine are considered fully vaccinated for the purpose of public health guidance.3

Running May 17 – August 31, 2021, the media includes digital ads, keyword search, social media ads, plus light-rail ads and three billboards near Uptown. In an effort to increase the prospective student funnel, the campaign website https://professional.uncc.edu uses a Search bar where qualified programs will display with the corresponding GPD name and contact.  Analytic reports on the campaigns progress will be reported via GPDNet throughout the summer.

If you have any questions about the campaign, please feel free to contact Karla Stanchina, Director of Communications for the Graduate School.

Master’s Students Seeking Part-Time Positions

Many admitted students in the M.Ed. Educational Leadership program plan to work part-time on campus in roles that will give them hands-on experience in higher education administration and student success, advising and support work.

These positions, formerly classified as graduate assistantships are now classified as student temporary employees.

Multiple M.Ed. students are still searching for part-time employment opportunities on campus for the 2021-22 academic year. Status of the U.S. Embassy & Consulates in India

According to the U.S. Embassy in India website:

All visa and VAC appointments, both in-person and interview waiver, at U.S. Embassy New Delhi and the consulates in Chennai, Hyderabad, and Kolkata are cancelled until May 15 and at the consulate in Mumbai until May 28.

The site further indicates that officials are “currently unable to reschedule any cancelled appointments” or “speculate on or respond to inquiries regarding potential future cancellations or appointment availability.”
Given the current state of the COVID-19 crisis in India, new students may have difficulty scheduling visa appointments. We remain hopeful that the challenges in India will improve soon and that students will be able to join the University community in August.
