Ya-yu Lo Takes de Silva Mentor Award

Ya-yu Lo, professor of Special Education and graduate program director for the M.Ed. and MAT programs in the Department of Special Education and Child Development, is the 2021 recipient of the Harshini V. de Silva Graduate Mentor Award. She was honored at a special Zoom ceremony Thursday, Feb. 18.

Wong Receives Reynolds Leadership Award

Associate Professor of Architecture Peter Wong was selected to receive the Thomas L. Reynolds Leadership Award for 2020-2021 for his contributions to student success above and beyond his teaching role.

The Reynolds Leadership Award honors excellence in graduate program administration and is presented annually to a Graduate Program Director (GPD) or Graduate Program Coordinator (GPC).

Few Seats Remain for Jan. Mentor Training

The Graduate School’s upcoming Mentor Training session has a few more openings.  Graduate faculty are invited to enroll for the Jan. 28-29 session.  The class runs from 9:30-12:30 each day.

To register, please complete the Mentor Training registration form.  The form will be closed when all seats are taken.

 

Latest Grad Student Exit Surveys Published

The latest graduate student exit surveys have been updated on GPDNet under Assessments.  The results are published by college along with 2019 results for comparison.

Graduate students are asked to complete the exit survey prior to completing their application to graduate.

Learn to Convert PDFs Into Dynamic Web Content

NC State’s second annual Extreme Makeover: PDF Edition will be held Monday, Sept. 21 to Friday, Oct. 16.  This year, they are inviting other institutions of higher education to participate.

Sponsored by the NC State IT Accessibility Office, the event aims to make websites accessible by eliminating inaccessible portable document format (PDF) files, which can be a barrier to individuals with disabilities.  Learn more and register by 9/14/2020 at NC State.

Grad Ed Summit Set Sept. 2

The Graduate School will host the annual Grad Ed Summit — this year a virtual meeting — on Sept. 2.

Topics at last year’s Summit included discussions on the role of the Graduate School, resources to manage programs and promote student success, student funding and the new GPD Recognition Award was introduced.

An agenda for this year’s meeting is forthcoming.

Mentor Training Sessions Scheduled

Two online mentoring sessions set for August are already full.

Additional sessions have been scheduled for October 1 & 2 (9:30 – 12:30 each day) and January 13 & 14 (9:30 – 12:30 each day).

GPDs will receive an email invitation to register approximately four weeks prior to the training date.

Online Workshop Focuses on Effective Online Courses

The UNC System Office will host an online workshop on Designing Effective Online Courses July 20. The workshop is free, but space is limited, and registration is required. Learn more and register.

The material will be aimed at instructors who have minimal proficiency leading online learning environments, but experienced instructors will also find new tips, hot topics, and useful activities.

The two-week session begins on July 20. Participants can finish the work at their own pace, but are encouraged to complete the program by July 31.

eGRAD Training Session Planned

Online training for eGRAD, electronic Graduate Recruitment and Admissions system, will be available June 23 in Canvas.
The session will be available as a module with the heading: “Training-Graduate School Electronic Systems Training.”  This training is required for access to the system to admit or deny applicants in eGRAD.

Reynolds Graduate Leadership Award Goes to Vetter

Lara Vetter, professor of English, was selected to receive this year’s Thomas L. Reynolds Leadership Award for her contributions to student success and enrollment management.

Boot Camp to Focus on Winning Grant Applications

The Research and Economic Development department’s 2020 Catalyst Boot Camp will focus on success in applying for grants from state and federal agencies, foundations and nonprofits. The goal of the program is to enhance the research and creative capacity of the University and institutionalize systemic support for the advancement and success of early- and mid-career faculty.

The Catalyst Boot Camp program will feature two tracks that will run concurrently: Catalyst for STEM+ and Catalyst for the Arts and Humanities.

Graduate Mentor Training Sessions Set for March, May

The series of Graduate Mentor Training sessions offered by the Graduate School will continue this year, with sessions scheduled Mar. 2 and May 12.

The training for graduate faculty is intended for faculty who want to improve mentoring skills.  The effort is part of the Graduate School’s commitment to improve research climate on campus.  The training is derived from the evidence-based practices of the CIMER Institute (Center for Improved Mentoring Experiences in Research) at the University of Wisconsin.

Florence Martin Takes GPD Leadership Award

Dr. Florence Martin, Education Leadership, is the recipient of the inaugural Thomas L. Reynolds Leadership Award for excellence in graduate program administration.  She is a professor in Learning, Design and Technology, Graduate Program Director (GPD) of the Post-Master’s Certificate of University and College Teaching and Program Coordinator of the Ed.D. in Educational Leadership, Learning, Design and Technology.

Dean Reynolds Featured in CGS Research Integrity Webcast

The Council of Graduate Schools (CGS) will host a webcast Aug. 7 on emerging best practices for improving institutional culture and research integrity.  The webcast highlights information from three graduate deans, including Tom Reynolds, Associate Provost and Dean of The Graduate School at UNC Charlotte.

Reynolds joins John Klingensmith, Associate Dean of Academic Affairs, Duke University Graduate School and Judith Stoddart, Senior Associate Dean at Michigan State’s Graduate School to share strategies under way to strengthen research culture on campus.  Their comments were recorded at a recent CGS conference.

CTL Offers Help on Short Course Design

The Center for Teaching and Learning (CTL) is offering a workshop and teaching guide to address common questions in developing and delivering short or part-of-term courses beyond summer sessions.

CTL’s support focuses on strategies to transform 15-week courses to 10-week, 7-week or 5-week format.  Some topics to be covered include why these courses are being offered, opportunities and challenges and how to plan and deliver them effectively.

To register, select a session: April 23, 2019, 12:30 – 1:30 PM or May 8, 2019, 12:30 – 1:30 PM.

New Site Connects Educators for Transatlantic Experiences

The Embassy of the United States in France has established an online platform to support French and American educators in finding partner institutions.

The FAAX (Franco-American Academic Exchange) web platform supports student mobility and exchanges between the two countries.  Through the FAAX platform, educators looking for transatlantic exchanges are now able to create a profile outlining the type of partnership they are seeking.

OIP Offers Free India Culture Workshop

The Office of International Programs will host a free Country-Culture Workshop featuring India on Mar. 22.

Topics include a comparison with India culture, language and linguistics politics, the India education system and more.

A traditional Indian lunch is included.
