Seeking Nominations: First Citizens Bank Scholars Award and the Harshini de Silva Graduate Mentor Award
The Graduate School is seeking nominations for the First Citizens Bank Scholars Award and the Harshini de Silva Graduate Mentor Award.
The Graduate School invites nominations for the 2023 First Citizens Bank Scholars Medal. This award recognizes a senior full-time faculty member for outstanding scholarship, creativity, and/or research. Nominations may come from any UNC Charlotte faculty member. The First Citizens Bank Scholars Medal has been awarded since 1988, with last year’s honoree being Dr. Jean-Claude Thill, Geography and Earth Sciences.
The award — consisting of a cash prize, framed citation and a medal — will be presented in the spring semester at a ceremony and reception presided over by the Chancellor, officials of First Citizens Bank, the Interim Dean of the Graduate School and University officers.

The Graduate School is also seeking nominations for the annual competition for the 2023 Harshini V. de Silva Graduate Mentor Award. This award recognizes a full-time member of the graduate faculty who exemplifies outstanding graduate mentoring. Nominations should come from a chair of the academic department. This award was established in memory of Dr. Harshini de Silva, an associate professor of biology, who was noted for her dedication to the academic and professional development of graduate students. The 2022 award recipient was Dr. Adam Reitzel, Department of Biological Sciences.
The award — consisting of a crystal obelisk, a framed citation and a cash prize — will be presented in the spring semester at a ceremony and reception presided over by the Chancellor, the Interim Dean of the Graduate School and University officers.

Grad Ed Leader DePauw to Speak on Holistic Admissions
Former Virginia Tech VP and Graduate School Dean Dr. Karen DePauw will address Charlotte Program Directors on diversity and holistic graduate admissions Mar. 18 in Cone Center.
Eligible workshop attendees will be entered to win five application fee waivers for their program (value of $375).

The Graduate School will offer the CIMER-based Mentor Training to graduate faculty on April 8. This event will be offered face-to-face and is limited to 20 participants. ETS GRE will host “Strategies to Promote the Success of Every Student” Feb. 23, 3-4:30 pm with featured speakers Maureen Grasso, ETS Graduate Education Advisor, Professor of Textile Sciences and Former Graduate Dean, NC State University, and Terry Ackerman ETS Graduate Education Advisor, Distinguished Professor of Educational Measurement, University of Iowa
The ETS presentation will focus on ways to strengthen support for students who are balancing the pressures of high educational expectations, personal finance and housing, and their own self-doubt.

Nomination Window Extended for Reynolds Leadership Award
Nominations for the Thomas L. Reynolds Leadership Award will be accepted through Jan. 31, extended from Jan. 28.
The Reynolds Leadership Award recognizes excellent leadership and outstanding service by a Graduate Program Director or Coordinator.
The recipient receives a cash award, an engraved plaque, and their name engraved on a perpetual trophy. Associate Professor of Architecture Peter Wong was selected to receive the Thomas L. Reynolds Leadership Award for 2020-2021 for his contributions to student success above and beyond his teaching role.

Free Open Access Publishing Available via Wiley Deal
Through a new agreement with Wiley Publishing, researchers at UNC Charlotte can publish open access at no cost and choose from 1,400+ hybrid journals to be the home for their next research and review articles.
Wiley reports that articles published open access consistently receive a larger readership, a higher number of citations, and a higher Altmetric score than articles which are not open access. Ventureprise Spring 2022 Virtual Cohort Applications Due Feb. 5
Faculty and students are encourage to apply to participate in the Spring 2022 Ventureprise Launch National Science Foundation I-Corps Virtual Cohort. The program, which starts Feb. 8, provides up to $5000 for a research or business idea, plus commercialization training and new NSF funding.
The second stage is a six-month, $50,000 NSF I-Corps Teams grant. Applications are currently open and are reviewed as they are submitted.

URC Committee Enrolling Judges for 2022 Event
The organizing committee for the Undergraduate Research Conference, Apr. 21-22, is seeking faculty, staff, and doctoral students to serve as judges for the URC 2022.

Rasmussen to Participate in Charlotte Authorship Seminar
Professor of Philosophy and Graduate School Faculty Fellow Lisa Rasmussen will join members of Charlotte’s legal staff later this month in a virtual session on authorship.
The event, “Who’s Steering the Author Ship? Introducing the Authorship Policy & Resolution Procedures,” will address University Policy 318, “Authorship Policy and Resolution Procedures,” established in May 2021. The session will be held Jan. 26 at Noon.

The 2022 Harshini V. de Silva Graduate Mentor Award goes to Dr. Adam Reitzel, Department of Biological Sciences. Established in memory of the noted professor of biology, the de Silva award recognizes a full-time member of the graduate faculty who evinces outstanding graduate mentoring.
Ceremonies honoring the two award winners will be scheduled in the spring semester, presided over by the Chancellor, Provost, and other University officers.

Collaborative Training Program Yields Rapid Research Dissemination
The Paper Chase program, sponsored by the Office of Undergraduate Research, is focused on developing skills to more effectively communicate about research.
Faculty will learn a team approach to writing, while mentoring to a publishable manuscript. Deadline to register is Jan. 5 through the Office of Undergraduate Research.

Registration Open for January Mentor Training Session
The Graduate School will offer Mentor Training for graduate faculty Jan. 7, 9:30-4:00. The session will be held face-to-face in the Student Union.
Join the 170 faculty who have already completed this training and rated it a good use of time. The curriculum comes from the Center for the Improvement of the Mentored Experience in Research (CIMER) at the University of Wisconsin. It is highly interactive and includes a variety of useful resources and tools.

NCCGS Fall Conference is Virtual and Free
The 2021 North Carolina Conference of Graduate Schools (NCCGS) all virtual annual conference will be held Oct. 28 and 29 from 9 a.m.-Noon with no registration nor fee required.
