India-China-Nigeria Academic Credentials

Introduction:

UNC Charlotte’s Graduate School has specific requirements which must be met by all students applying for graduate study.  We detail those on the Graduate Admissions website.  This resource section (of GPDNet) expands on those requirements for prospective students from India, China and Nigeria. The majority of Graduate School applicants are from these countries. In this section we hope you’ll gain a deeper understanding of the academic achievements for applicants from these countries, and be able to make an informed admittance/enrollment decision.

Please note: Student candidates will appear in your review portal ONLY if all academic credentials submitted have been accepted and approved by Graduate Admissions.

Additional questions regarding international accreditation can be addressed to the Graduate School.

Country by County

India (including Nepal, Bangladesh)

Graduate study applicants from India, Nepal, and Bangladesh must have received their undergraduate equivalent (or soon will have), and possess the following:

  • Individual semester wise statement of marks for at least six semesters showing grades instead of exams (preferred) or a comprehensive transcript (in cases where the mother university does not issue individual semester mark sheets);
  • A provisional degree certificate or a degree certificate. Graduate Admissions will not accept a Special Certificate of a Provisional Certificate;
  • Students with consolidated mark sheet or comprehensive transcript;  Applicants must upload their Statement of Marks aka mark sheets received from the mother university, to their education record in the application portal. Transcripts are required from every higher education institution attended. Any document upload is considered unofficial.;
  • A degree or in cases where one has not been issued yet, a provisional certificate. Note:  The official degree must be submitted prior to the second registration cycle.  Students are given a grace period during the initial semester of enrollment;
  • Credential evaluation services are optional. Note:  Undergraduate applicants who have earned a three-year bachelor’s degree (such as a BBA or BCA), may be asked to submit this requirement.  GPA is provided in a credential evaluation but not for equivalency evaluations.

Statement of Marks (mark sheets) are the best instrument to understand the student’s successfully completed courses and their “grades”.

The simplest way to understand what is on a transcript is by noting class distinctions:  1st, 2nd, etc. with 1st class being the highest class attained.  Additionally, check if the student graduated with honors.

Please note that a prospect is responsible for obtaining and submitting their credential evaluation and their fully calculated GPA equivalent.  There are numerous services available to them (fee charged). Educational Credential Evaluators and  World Education Service .

China

Graduate study applicants from China must have received their undergraduate equivalent (or soon will have), and possess the following:

  • Graduated from a long cycle Benke program (Zhuanke programs don’t award a BA degree – only AA);
  • A Graduation Certificate;
  • A Degree Certificate.

Applicants must upload their transcripts to their education record in the applicant portal. Transcripts are required from every higher education institution attended. Any document uploaded is considered unofficial.  Graduate Admissions requires all official documents issued in Chinese to be accompanied by an English translation from a certified translation company. These official documents must be brought to the Graduate School prior to the student beginning classes.

A Graduation Certificate (either Bachelor’s or Master’s);

  • A Degree Certificate (either Bachelor’s or Master’s);
  • Credential evaluation services are optional.  GPA is provided in a credential evaluation but not for equivalency evaluations;
  • Certificates must be in English reflecting the degree awarded.

Please note that a prospect is responsible for obtaining and submitting their translated certificates;  credential evaluation; and their fully calculated GPA equivalent.  There are numerous services available to them to order it (fee charged). Educational Credential Evaluators and  World Education Service.

Nigeria

Graduate study applicants from Nigeria must have received their undergraduate equivalent (or soon will have), and possess the following:

  • A transcript which contains a degree conferred date;
  • An official cover letter from their institution of record.

Applicants must upload their transcripts to their education record in the applicant portal. Transcripts are required from every higher education institution attended. Any document uploaded is considered unofficial. Once admitted, the Graduate School will ask the applicant for the official cover letter from their graduating institution.

The transcript is the best instrument to understand the student’s successful completion of undergraduate courses and their “grades” received therein. Nigeria’s General Polytechnic Grading Scale is similar to the grading scale in the United States.

Nigerian Grade                       USA Equivalent

A, AB                                       A
B, BC                                      B
